Virtuous Vendetta: The Story of the Forty-seven Ronin in Prints
December 7, 2012 - April 1, 2013
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, 1040 Moss Street

Explore one of the most famous stories in Japanese history. This true story, which took place between 1701 and 1703, embodies the highest loyalty capable of members of the samurai class and dramatically illustrates the finest qualities in the samurai code of honour. It is the most celebrated example of loyalty and warrior ethics in Japanese history. The exhibition features more than 50 woodblock prints by various well known artists, enhanced by video footage of the numerous movies and TV films on the subject. Watch for Curator talks and docent-led tours in the New Year.
This classic saga begins in 1700 when Lord Asano Naganori under the guidance of Lord Kira Yoshinaka, is commissioned to look after the emperor's envoys during their visit to the shogun's court. Lord Kira, who is a bit greedy and unethical, rudely insults Lord Asano for refusing to bribe him for advice on official etiquette. Asano was so humiliated that in a rage, he drew his sword and wounded his tormentor on the forehead. To draw one's sword within the shogun's castle grounds is a very serious offense, and thus the authorities instruct Asano to commit suicide (hara-kiri). With his death, his feudal retainers in turn lose their status as samurai, becoming ronin, which means masterless samurai. After patiently waiting and planning for over a year, the ronin execute a daring assault on Lord Kira's estate, despite knowing that they would themselves be forced to commit suicide to atone for their crime.

Traces: Fantasy Worlds & Tales of Truth
contemporary drawing exhibition featuring: Daniel Barrow, Alison Norlen, Ed Pien
January 18 - April 21
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, 1040 Moss Street

Like the work of all good storytellers, the artists in this exhibition captivate the viewer with their imagined worlds informed by eerily familiar narratives. Through each artist's distinct vision of humanity, these illusory spaces - in some cases haunted by either memory or mythology - reflect back to us ugliness, despair, complexity, beauty, opulence, and frivolity.
What distinguishes the work of Daniel Barrow, Alison Norlen, and Ed Pien is not just that they use drawing as their primary means of creation for these stories, but that they push the parameters and possibilities of what drawing can be by testing its material, spatial, and thematic considerations. They take in the world through their own unique lens, filter it through their imagination and private thoughts, and send it back out into public space, having constructed for us a new world through drawing. Our role as the viewer is to read these works with the same curious impulse as the maker. We are asked to seek out and participate in the narratives as active agents, investigating the traces left and lines made.

The History and Future of Healthy Cities
Trevor Hancock
University of Victoria
Thursday, January 24, 7:30pm
Legacy Art Gallery - 630 Yates Street, Victoria

The health of urban populations is to a large extent a function of the physical and social urban environment in which they live; to be healthy, people need healthy cities. This raises two simple but profound questions: What is a healthy city, and how do we get one? In this presentation Dr. Hancock will discuss the concept of a healthy city as it has evolved over the past 150 years or so, as well as his own involvement in developing and implementing this concept in Europe and North America in the past 30 years. He will end by discussing the major challenges we face if we are to create healthier cities in the 21st century, both in Canada (and especially here in Victoria) and globally.

Mélange
February 2 - 27
Moka House Coffee Shoal Point
Fisherman's Wharf, Victoria, BC

Mélange is a visual art exhibit which brings together four highly creative local artists whose works and artistic view points are unique, moving and insightful. Carron Berkes, David Ladmore, Laurie Ladmore and Rob Vickery present Mélange: a diverse array of two-dimensional works in acrylics, etchings, oils, mixed media and photography. Free event and suitable for all ages and family members.
The Artists
Carron Berkes conveys two distinct themes: the first deals with her love of animals, which is reflected in the expressions of her renditions of endangered land and sea animals; in contrast, the nature-themed paintings reveal the strength and drama of the sea, and colourful semi-abstract landscapes focusing on light, serenity and colour on canvas. Carron will show acrylic and mixed media works.
Both David Ladmore and Laurie Ladmore explore landscape themes in their oil paintings and David's etchings. Each is inspired not just by the surface beauty of the world but also by what lies beneath: the undercurrents and rhythms of existence; the universal forces.
The work of Rob Vickery is primarily about the quality of light that comprises the physical world, yet hints at a light within the self, and offers a glimpse of life's subtle inner nature. Photographic, mixed media and acrylic works will be featured.

Northern Reflections
Choral music from Scandinavia and Canada Via Choralis chamber choir conducted by Nicholas Fairbank, with Braden Young, piano, and guest artists Hexaphone vocal sextet
Sunday, February 3, 3pm
St. Elizabeth's Church, 10030 3rd St., Sidney

The choral tradition is strong in Scandinavia, and there is a rich repertoire of music to choose from. This is the focus of Via Choralis' upcoming concert, with a representation from Iceland, Norway and Sweden as well as from Canada. The singers have been working hard to perform the music in the original languages, thanks to native-speaking coaches. From Canada, Via Choralis sings works by Victoria composer Nicholas Fairbank, and Hexaphone will add pieces by Vancouver's Stephen Chatman and Toronto's Derek Holman. Together the two groups will end the concert with the Norwegian Edvard Greig's little-heard "Prayer and Temple Dance" from his uncompleted opera Olav Trygvason about the king of Norway by the same name who ruled from from 995 to 1000 C.E.
Hexaphone, Victoria's six-member a capella vocal ensemble, was formed in 2002 with the goal of performing diverse styles of vocal music, one voice to a part. The group has become a gem of Victoria's music scene, singing an eclectic range of music with a particular focus on new Canadian works. In 2008 Hexaphone was chosen to premiere the BC 150 Project: Five Songs for British Columbia, commissioned by the Canadian Music Centre to celebrate BC's 150th anniversary. In 2011 and again in 2012 they toured the Okanagan, singing in Hope, Penticton, Westbank and Kelowna. In the summer of 2012 they were prizewinning performers at the International Choral Kathaumixw in Powell River, BC. www.hexaphone.org
Artistic Director Nicholas Fairbank divides his time between teaching, performing, composing, conducting and adjudicating. He is currently on the faculty of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, Artistic Director of the Viva Youth Choirs, Guest Conductor of the Civic Orchestra of Victoria, and an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre. As well as earning Associateship diplomas in organ performance from the Royal Conservatory and the RCCO, Mr. Fairbank has Masters degrees in music and French from the University of Paris, the University of California at Santa Barbara and the University of Victoria. His works have been performed across Canada, the USA, Mexico and in Europe.
Accompanist Braden Young studied piano performance focusing on collaborative piano at the Victoria Conservatory of Music (AVCM 2009) and the University of British Columbia (BMus 2011). He has also pursued studies in voice and in composition, and has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards for academic excellence as well as performance. His teachers include Corey Hamm, Jamie Syer and Robert Holliston; he has also attended master classes with Rena Sharon at the Vancouver International Song Institute.
Tickets: adults $15, students $8, from Tanner's Books, choir members and at the door.

More info:
The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is excited to offer a rigorous course of special events and programs in affiliation with this exhibition, starting with our Winter Season Opening on January 18 and extending through February and March including artist talks, drop in tours and a series of workshops led by Montreal artist-group the Mere Phantoms. The Maritime Museum and Theatre Inconnu present
The Voyage of the Forest Dream and The Amethyst Incident
Wednesday, March 20th, 8pm

Dramatic readings of two maritime adventures. A joint fundraising event for The Maritime Museum and Theatre Inconnu.
The Voyage of the Forest Dream, a memoir by Captain Niels Peter Thomsen.
Relive the vibrant days when sea travel meant sailing with the wind, sailors climbed masts to dizzying heights to set sails on ships swaying in high seas and when journeys ended, crews were paid in gold coins.
The Amethyst Incident, excerpts from the original diary by Coxswain Leslie Frank (edited by Rachel Wyatt).
In 1949, the HMS Amethyst was unwittingly caught in the middle of the Chinese Civil War on the Yangtze River. The battle that ensued became an international incident with all the characteristics of a high-octane suspense thriller, and formed the basis for a critically acclaimed feature film in 1957.
The readings will be done by University of Victoria professors emeriti: John Krich and Juliana Saxton, accompanied by Will Weigler and Clayton Jevne. All four professional actors will take you back to the romance and danger inherent on the high seas, in the atmospheric environment of the historic Maritime Museum. Live sea shanties will set the tone for the evening.

Joseph Haydn's oratorio "The Creation"
Via Choralis chamber choir and orchestra conducted by Nicholas Fairbank, and soloists Anna Shill (soprano), Adam Dyjach (tenor) & Paul Winkelmans (bass).
Saturday, May 4, 7:30pm Alix Goolden Hall, 907 Pandora St., Victoria
Sunday, May 5, 2:00pm St. Elizabeth's Church, 10030 3rd St., Sidney

The Creation (German: Die Schöpfung), written between 1796 and 1798, is considered by many to be Haydn's masterpiece. The oratorio depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as described in the biblical Book of Genesis and in Milton's Paradise Lost. Scored for soprano, tenor and bass soloists, chorus and a symphonic orchestra, it is structured in three parts. The orchestra often plays alone, notably in episodes of tone painting: the appearance of the sun, the elements, the creation of the animals, and above all in the overture, the famous depiction of Chaos before the creation.
Via Choralis, now in its 14th year, has augmented its numbers to about 50 singers in order to balance with the 32-piece orchestra. The soloists for these performances are all advanced voice students from the University of Victoria and the University of Manitoba. Anna Shill (soprano) depicts the angel Gabriel in Parts 1 and 2, and in Part 3 sings the role of Eve, while tenor Adam Dyjach sings the role of the angel Uriel. Paul Winkelmans (bass) is the angel Raphael in the first two sections and in Part 3 takes the role of Adam.
Artistic Director Nicholas Fairbank divides his time between teaching, performing, composing, conducting and adjudicating. He is currently on the faculty of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, is Artistic Director of the Viva Youth Choirs and an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre. This season he was also a Guest Conductor of the Civic Orchestra of Victoria.
Tickets: adults $25(in advance) or $30 (at the door), students with card $10 (at the door only). Advance tickets from Tanner's Books (Sidney), Ivy's Bookshop (Oak Bay), Long & McQuade (Victoria), Dollar Den (Brentwood Bay), and from choir members.

Rob Vickery Art Exhibit
June 2 - 29
Fort Street Moka House Coffee

Throughout the month of June at Fort Street Moka House Coffee, local Victoria artist Rob Vickery presents a diverse selection of photographic and mixed-media works. Blending physically recognizable objects found in nature with the play of light, Vickery's photographic works contain subtle spiritual undertones, hinting that there might be something more to this world worth appreciating. His mixed-media works are a melange of many qualities: subtle, quiet, introspective, silent; textured - both real and implied, they reveal a narrative of physical rhythms and undercurrents, and possibly of a greater awareness of being.

Hornby Festival
August 1 - 10
Hornby Community Hall and Olsen Farm

Since its inception in 1982, the Hornby Festival Society has earned a national reputation for artistic excellence and adventurous programming. In its early years, the Festival focused primarily on the classical genre, and has evolved to include jazz, world & traditional music, modern dance, and spoken word. We are pleased to present the African Showboyz, PAPAGROOVE, Good Lovelies, Foggy Hogtown Boys, H'Sao, Marie-Josée Lord, Anton Kuerti, Colin Carr, Al Simmons, Charles Van Sandwyk, High Plains Doctor (a film by Michael Oved Dayan), and the Island Gallery exhibition this year.
This 10-day world-class event has been named one of the top five festivals in Canada (Aeroplan Magazine) and one of the top 5 cultural events in BC (Macleans). The Festival presents twelve to sixteen concerts in late July/early August. The primary venues are the charming Community Hall and, for our outdoor performances, Olsen Farm, with its fabulous ocean and mountain backdrop. Beginning in 2006, the Hornby Festival began its widely successful "Art in Unusual Places", with the mainstage artists performing short sets at unusual outdoor locations such as Sandpiper Bluffs, the Recycling Depot, or the beach at Big Tribune Bay.
Hornby Island is located two islands east of Vancouver Island, north of Nanaimo. If ferry connections are made, the trip from Vancouver takes approximately five hours. The Festival is sustained by Festival Society memberships, donations, program advertisers, government and foundation funders, ticket sales, and fundraising events.

Mélange II
September 2 - 29
Moka House Coffee Shoal Point
Fisherman's Wharf, Victoria, BC

Bringing together two highly creative local artists whose works and artistic view points are unique, moving and insightful, Carron Berkes and Rob Vickery present Mélange II: a diverse array of two-dimensional works in acrylics, mixed media and photography. Free event. Suitable for all ages and family members.
The Artists
Carron Berkes is an internationally collected local artist who enjoys painting, sculpture and photography. Working as a multi-media visual artist in painting (acrylics and watercolours), mixed media, recycled art and found objects, her many colourful themes include the natural world (plants, animals and landscapes), abstraction, figurative and whimsical narratives. Works presented in this show speak of subtle and vibrant energy, light, color, shape and form. Infused with simplicity and imagination, her art blends realism (Pears, Happiness) with abstractive interpretations of the physical world (Daydream Series). Carron will show acrylic and mixed media works.
Rob Vickery creates two and three-dimensional art, including drawings, hand-built ceramic sculpture, mixed-media, paintings and photography. The body of work presented in this show is primarily about the quality of light that comprises the physical world, yet hints at a light within the self, and offers a glimpse of life's subtle inner nature. Blending physically recognizable objects found in nature with the play of light, Vickery's photographic works contain subtle spiritual undertones, hinting that there might be something more to this world worth appreciating. His mixed-media works are a mélange of many qualities: subtle, quiet, introspective, silent; textured - both real and implied, they reveal a narrative of physical rhythms and undercurrents, and possibly of a greater awareness of being. Photographic, mixed media and acrylic works will be featured. His works are in private collections in Canada, Thailand, Japan and America.
James Bay Art Walk
Concurrent to Mélange II, Carron Berkes and Rob Vickery, showing at Shoal Point Moka House Coffee, are participating in the 9th Annual James Bay Art Walk. With 19 exhibitors in 13 studios and venues scattered throughout beautiful, historic James Bay, the event will be held on Saturday, September 14th and Sunday, September 15th from 11AM - 5PM.
